Seeds at home..

I finally got round to sowing some seeds at home including tomatoes - sungella, sungold, alicante and moneymaker.

Chillis, melons and cucumber - burpless

The problem I will have though is that they will need to go into a much lighter place than my windowsill and if the weather stays like this it will be too cold in my greenhouse for them - What to do, oh what to do....... any advice?

It might be worth getting some grow lights.....! Try googling for more info.

What I'm doing with my tomatoes at the moment is putting them outside during the day, with a clear plastic propagator lid over them to protect them from the cold wind. They get more light outdoors than they do on the windowsill, just enough to stop them going too leggy. Then I bring them indoors at night. Growlights are a better option though, if you have the space and cash!

I did see an idea where you cut one side off a cardboard box and cover the rest of the inside with foil so it reflects more light back into the 'dark' side of the seedlings. I haven't tried it but it sounds like it might help in the short term...or you could get some grow lights...

I started mine in Feb on a windowsill & moved them into my unheated greenhouse in March. They're doing fine so long as I fight the snails off every evening. Once they've germinated they'll withstand anything other than very close to frost. Best of luck, John

Hope the tomatoes found enough light and have grown to nice starts for you. Lovely finishing touches on that shed!
